cliff gets resolved. in the end, they have got not much. they can say they have a mandate so it's equal, but it really isn't and they know that. >> we seem to know as much about mitt romney's taxes as we do about the loopholes republicans are willing to close in this. they can't offer any specifics. is this a turnoff for the people? >> in fairness we have to recognize that there's been a lack of specifics on both sides here. they are negotiating in public. you notice that that's how this stuff is coming out. it's not phone calls between the two sides or closed-door meetings. we don't know what spending democrats would cut and we haven't even begun the entitlements discussion, which the president is theoretically open to. so there's a lot that still needs to happen. i mean for you and me and normal people, three weeks away may seem like a short time, but there's a feeling that this has barely even begun. >> here's senator bob corker and clairk mccaskill. here it is. >> great detail, very painful cuts to me

i want to talk to you about the fiscal cliff. but, first, i want to talk about jim demint. >> sure. >> what is this say about the senate, about the ability of someone like jim demint, an avowed conservative, to accomplish what he wants to accomplish within that chamber, that he felt the need or saw the opportunity to step outside of the chamber? what does that say about the folk like yourself who are still within it? >> well, jim demint is going to continue to be a leader in this country for years to come. specifically on conservative issues. he's going to continue to push for ways to cut spending and to limit the size of government. and i welcome that. he's choosing to do it outside now rather than inside the senate but he's had a huge, positive influence on the senate and we're going to continue to see that for years to come. >> senator, this may seem like a simple question, but i wonder, and a lot of people do is the senate from your perspective, is the senate a difficult place to be if you are someone who comes from executive

would occur after the fiscal cliff deadline. the senate will organize itself at the start of the new year. so boehner's making threats that really have very, very little to do with reality. unfortunately, that seems like a lot of his approaches to this whole fiscal cliff debate. >> john nichols, great to have you with us. >>> there's a lot more coming up in the next half hour of "the ed show." stay with us. >>> we are a country of unlimited opportunity. we want the world's best and brightest to come here. >> house republicans pass an immigration bill. xavier becerra calls divisive and inferior. he's here to explain why, next. >>> the nation's first fast food strike is a historic protest for workers rights. the workers are fighting back and we'll tell you what it's all about. >>> and the white house debuts their first beau obama christmas video. but how does it stack up to barney cam? >> you're going to have to learn about the national parks if you want to be a junior park ranger. >>> welcome back to "the ed show." thanks for wat

jim was talking about a lot of specifics here, and we talk about the fiscal cliff. in some ways this is really a lot about symbolism and more for us, i think, than the two of them. can you describe what you think it means? >> sure. well, let me start by just saying across the street from where i'm at at rice, george herbert walker bush has been in the hospital, and we wish him a speedy recovery from his illness. it's an example of how you can form a friendship at these meetings. bill clinton had beat the sitting president, george herber walker bush, and they met similar to the way romney and obama are now, and now clinton and 41 are dear, close friends and have done many constructive things together around the world. i think, by and large, these meetings, the luncheon today, will be about optics. it's the photo ops. it's a chance to say america is united. there may be an opportunity here for mitt romney to come out and talk about the fiscal cliff or saying we must avoid falling off it towards something that could be helpful to the white house in the end. i remember
